Sophora microphylla, commonly known as weeping kōwhai, is a small, graceful tree native to New Zealand. Renowned for its bright yellow, pea-like flowers, this deciduous tree blooms in early spring, attracting native birds like tui and bellbird with its nectar. It features distinctive, compound leaves with numerous tiny leaflets, which give it a fine-textured appearance. The tree can reach heights of up to 10 meters and is often found along riverbanks and in lowland forests. Kowhai is hardy to cool climates, wind and poorer soils but should be planted in full sun on a well-drained site for best results . Kōwhai is culturally significant to the Māori and is also appreciated in horticulture for its ornamental value and adaptability to various soils. Low flammability species.
