Fuscospora cliffortioides, known as mountain beech, is a prominent native tree species in New Zealand’s alpine regions. Its smooth, grey bark contrasts with its bright green, oval-shaped leaves. In autumn, the foliage turns a stunning golden hue. Adaptable and resilient, it plays a vital role in alpine ecosystems. Mountain beech grows to 20m tall but near the treeline forms a ‘goblin forest’ where trees are no more than 2m tall. Low/moderate flammability species.
