Muehlenbeckia astonii, commonly known as shrubby tororaro, is a distinctive New Zealand native plant. Deciduous, its wiry, interlacing branches create a dense, tangled appearance, adorned with small, glossy leaves. In spring, it produces inconspicuous flowers followed by clusters of white berries. Coastal to lowland. This species is associated with ‘grey’ shrub communities, largely confined to drier lowland parts of eastern NZ. Hardy and adaptable, it’s prized for erosion control.
