Prumnopitys taxifolia, commonly known as matai or black pine, is a native New Zealand tree esteemed for its elegant form and cultural significance growing up to 40m in height. With its dark green, needle-like leaves and reddish-brown bark, it adds beauty to forests and woodlands. Matai produces small, purple fruits that are a vital food source for native birds. Matai is found in lowland forest. Often in drier climates, where it can dominate alluvial soils which are waterlogged/flooded in winter and dry in summer. As with many NZ natives it has a very different juvenile form to its adult form. 2 years old
