Pseudopanax crassifolia, commonly known as lancewood, is a unique, slow-growing New Zealand native tree renowned for its distinctive juvenile and adult foliage. In its juvenile stage, it features long, narrow, sharply serrated leaves that grow directly downwards, creating a striking lance-like appearance. As it matures, the tree transitions to a rounded crown with broader, less serrated leaves. Typically growing up to 15 meters, it prefers well-drained soils and sunny locations. It is found throughout NZ from sea level up to 750m. Lancewood is highly regarded for its ornamental value and ability to adapt to various garden settings, providing an exotic, architectural element to landscapes.
